OpenAI has announced it will fully release its most sophisticated model on Thursday and is expanding its preview access globally.

Following pressure from the previous U.S. administration to roll out its latest model in phases, OpenAI initially made a version of its GPT-5.6 model available only to select partners. According to a report, government restrictions on the platform have now been lifted. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that this week's launch has received approval from U.S. government leadership.

Previously, Anthropic clashed with Washington over potential misuse of its Mythos and Fable models. Those models were placed under unusual export controls by the U.S. Department of Commerce, but the restrictions were removed after extensive discussions. This action caused significant controversy within the AI industry, raising questions about how much control governments might exert over cutting-edge artificial intelligence.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Commerce did not respond to a request for comment.

OpenAI's GPT-5.6 series of AI models encompasses three tiers. The company stated that its flagship product, Sol, is the most powerful. Terra is suited for everyday use and costs half the price per token compared to Sol, while Luna is designed to be fast and affordable. OpenAI's signature product, ChatGPT, is built on the GPT infrastructure, which is also used by other developers to create AI tools and services.
