Precious Metals Sector Erupts! Spot Gold Breaks $4,600 for First Time, Fueled by Rate Cut Hopes and Geopolitical Risks

Deep News01-12

The precious metals market experienced a significant surge during the early trading session on January 12, 2026, with spot gold prices climbing sharply and breaking through the $4,600 per ounce barrier for the first time ever. Since the start of the new year, the price of gold has already accumulated gains of $280. At the time of writing, the price has retreated slightly from its peak. Spot silver also posted substantial gains today, skyrocketing over 5% during the session and briefly surpassing $83.

In the A-share market, multiple stocks within the precious metals sector saw strong advances. At the time of writing, Xiaocheng Technology surged over 6%, Hunan Silver rose nearly 4%, and Shandong Gold gained over 3%. Companies such as Zhaojin Gold, Western Gold, Shanjin Gold, and Zhongjin Gold also followed with notable increases.

Gold-related stocks in the Hong Kong market demonstrated equally robust performance. By the latest update, shares of China Gold International, Zhufeng Gold, Lingbao Gold, and China Silver Group had all posted significant gains. Domestic branded gold jewelry prices rose in tandem with the international market. For instance, Chow Sang Sang's pure gold jewelry was priced at 1,429 yuan per gram, an increase of 19 yuan per gram from January 10; Lao Miao Gold was quoted at 1,429 yuan per gram, up 22 yuan per gram; and Lao Feng Xiang's pure gold jewelry reached 1,428 yuan per gram, marking a rise of 29 yuan per gram from January 10.

On the news front, the mixed U.S. non-farm payroll data released last Friday has bolstered market expectations for interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Concurrently, escalating geopolitical risks have amplified demand for safe-haven assets. According to a report from The New York Times on the 10th, citing anonymous U.S. officials, President Trump was recently briefed on potential military strike options against Iran.
