Deep News07-08

Edge cloud platform provider Fastly, Inc. has announced its membership in the DIMPACT alliance, becoming the first edge cloud platform participant in the coalition. DIMPACT is an alliance of leading industry organizations dedicated to aligning industry changemakers and policymakers around scientific solutions to reduce the environmental impact of digital media product delivery.

Fastly, Inc. will contribute its edge network data and infrastructure expertise, along with transparent emission calculation and reporting methodologies, to the DIMPACT alliance. This collaboration aims to assist media, streaming, and publishing companies in understanding and optimizing their digital carbon footprints. As digital content consumption continues to rise, emissions from data delivery have become a significant issue for many businesses addressing their Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.

The DIMPACT alliance, coordinated by SLR Consulting, provides industry decision-makers with credible data, actionable insights, and user-friendly resources to drive continuous reduction in the carbon footprint of digital media products. The alliance's tools are built on lifecycle assessment standards and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol's ICT Sector Guidance. These tools are already utilized by major global media organizations, including the BBC, Netflix, and Sky, for environmental reporting and developing emission reduction strategies.

Eoghan Kelly, Head of Sustainability at Fastly, Inc., stated that as digital content, including AI-generated traffic, continues to reshape the internet landscape, businesses require granular data and actionable insights to understand and optimize their digital footprints. Fastly, Inc. is committed to ensuring that through industry collaboration, the future internet is not only faster and more secure but also more sustainable.

Jason Bell, Director at SLR Consulting and Executive Sponsor of DIMPACT, noted that accurately calculating digital emissions requires a deep understanding of every segment of the data transmission path from the source to the end-user device. The expertise of Fastly, Inc. at the edge fills a crucial piece of this puzzle, propelling the industry toward a transparent, standardized blueprint for digital decarbonization. Fastly, Inc. has previously committed to covering 100% of its global network and office electricity consumption with renewable energy and has launched a sustainability dashboard for customers to track emissions generated by platform usage.
