Record Demand for Japan's 20-Year Government Bond Auction as Higher Yields Draw Domestic Buyers Back

Deep News10-20

Tuesday's auction of 20-year Japanese government bonds drew the strongest demand on record, as elevated yields pulled domestic investors back into the market.

The bid-to-cover ratio for the auction came in at 5.84 times, up from 4.01 times at the previous sale and above the 3.73 times average over the past 12 months.

Another gauge of robust investor demand, the spread between the average accepted price and the lowest accepted price, known as the tail, was 0.07, narrower than last month's 0.15.

Following the release of the auction results, the 20-year Japanese government bond yield briefly fell 6 basis points to 3.710%.

Ryutaro Kimura, a senior bond strategist at BNP Paribas Asset Management, said the "positive result" reflected "high interest rates combined with easing fiscal concerns, driving a recovery in domestic investor demand." He noted that since June, life insurers have once again stepped up their net purchases of ultra-long government bonds, further confirming the rebound in demand.

Amid a global bond selloff triggered by escalating Middle East tensions and rising oil prices, yields on Japanese ultra-long government bonds have recently approached multi-decade highs, accompanied by mounting inflation and fiscal concerns.

Earlier this month, the 20-year Japanese government bond yield climbed to its highest level since the mid-1990s, while the 30-year yield hit a record high.

The next major test for the Japanese government bond market will be the Bank of Japan's policy meeting next week. The market widely expects the central bank to keep rates unchanged, with overnight index swap pricing indicating roughly a 6.2% probability of a rate hike; traders will also closely watch Governor Kazuo Ueda's post-decision press conference for signals on the pace and scope of further policy tightening.

From October 20-22 along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, the 2026 Sustainable Global Leaders Conference returns once again. Nobel and Turing Award winners will take the stage to discuss the future and trends of technology, and the internet-famous professor who "rescues" people from anxiety and the era of involution — Macfarlane — will hold a live dialogue with Xiang Biao!
