SMIC Founder Richard Chang Highlights Niche Markets as Key Semiconductor Sector Breakthrough, Bullish on AI Scenario Applications

Deep News05-09

Richard Chang, founder of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), recently stated in an exclusive interview that the development of the domestic semiconductor industry must focus on both scale and advanced technology, while also paying attention to currently lacking "little giant" projects to achieve the goal of self-reliance and self-strengthening.

He believes it is necessary to deeply cultivate niche markets: achieving global excellence, addressing the talent foundation gap in the industry, and complementing semiconductor design, materials, and equipment are the long-term goals for high-quality development.

"AI ultimately needs to be applied in specific scenarios. The competition threshold for cloud-based large models is extremely high, which is not something conventional companies can participate in. However, the scenario-based applications of distributed AI have a vast market space, ranging from industrial control and automotive electronics to wearable devices, all requiring a large number of semiconductor components and solutions adapted to specific scenarios. There are many breakthrough opportunities here that have yet to be tapped."
