TrendForce: OLEDoS Penetration in VR/MR Expected to Surge to 58% by 2030

Stock News10-20

According to the latest report by TrendForce titled "2025 Near-Eye Display Market Trends and Technology Analysis," OLEDoS is set to become a pivotal display technology for mid- to high-end VR/MR devices, experiencing a dual breakthrough in both supply chain and application. The report forecasts that the penetration rate of OLEDoS in VR/MR will rapidly increase to 58% by 2030. Recently, Apple has re-entered the market with its upgraded Vision Pro, further positioning itself in VR/MR head-mounted displays based on OLEDoS panels, while focusing on enhancing computational performance and improving weight distribution.

In terms of shipment performance, international brands such as Meta, Apple, and Sony have fallen short of expectations, leading TrendForce to project global VR/MR product shipments will drop to 5.6 million units in 2025. While VR/MR headsets face short-term developmental challenges, long-term projections indicate that, due to major brands investing in dual upgrades of software and hardware, global shipments are expected to reach 14.4 million units by 2030.

TrendForce highlights that display technology is crucial in determining the pricing of VR/MR products, with cost-effective LCDs remaining the mainstream choice in recent years. However, as Chinese suppliers expand their OLEDoS production lines and international brands actively utilize OLEDoS to achieve high-resolution visuals and lightweight designs, the penetration rate of OLEDoS is anticipated to significantly increase in the coming years.

From a supply chain perspective, besides Sony, more than ten Chinese manufacturers including Seeya, BOE, and Sidtek are actively setting up 12-inch production lines. Continuous improvement in process technology yields is expected to lower OLEDoS production costs. On the application side, both Apple and Samsung are prioritizing enhanced software experiences through application platforms and generative AI. Apple’s upgraded Vision Pro will incorporate a new-generation M5 chip to boost computing power, extend battery life, and enhance the speed of AI and application operations. Samsung has partnered with Google and Qualcomm to introduce the Galaxy XR, featuring a 4K OLEDoS display, leveraging the Android XR platform to support applications on phones and tablets for a more integrated ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Meta is planning to combine a 0.9-inch OLEDoS with a pancake optical structure to overcome current product shape limitations, catering to the need for thinner and lighter VR/MR devices. TrendForce envisions that, with dual optimizations in cost and technology, OLEDoS is likely to gradually penetrate from the mid- to high-end market into the mainstream market, becoming a significant driver for the transformation and upgrade of the VR/MR industry.
