Funding Boost and Valuation Surge
According to reports, AI chip startup Olix has raised $312 million in its latest funding round, attracting investments from SoftBank-backed ARM Holdings and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings. The financing has tripled the company's valuation to $3.3 billion within just six months.
Company Background and Technology Focus
Founded by James Dacombe in 2024, Olix specializes in developing optical processors designed to efficiently handle AI inference workloads while overcoming performance constraints imposed by traditional memory bottlenecks. The round was led by New York-based investment firm Fundomo, with participation from ARM Holdings, Hudson River Trading, and Hastings. This latest valuation, including new funds, reaches $3.3 billion, a significant leap from the just-over $1 billion valuation achieved in February when the company raised $220 million.
New Leadership Appointment
Alongside the funding, Olix announced the appointment of Matt Briers, former CFO of British fintech company Wise, as its new chief financial officer.
Market Context and Investor Sentiment
Recent concerns on Wall Street over the scale of debt-financed AI infrastructure investments have triggered a chain reaction in stock prices for chipmakers and storage companies. However, private market investors continue to pour substantial capital into chip startups, particularly those claiming to deliver faster or more efficient AI services for clients.
Operational Footprint and Production Plans
Olix currently operates offices in London, Bristol, Toronto, and Austin, employing over 140 people, including key talent from major U.S. tech firms and the semiconductor industry. The company plans to enter the chip "tape-out" phase later this year—the final step in design verification before moving to mass production. Initial products are expected to be delivered to customers next year. Olix intends to sell its offerings as server racks, incorporating its proprietary chips along with integrated software and networking equipment.
