Montage Tech's profit alert and CPU-driven growth: after a 9% bounce, the quality of recovery still needs Q4 confirmation

Stock News10-24

On 20 October, Montage Technology Co.,Ltd. (ASX: 06809) issued a positive profit alert, expecting to record a profit of RMB1.2 billion to RMB1.3 billion for the third quarter ended 30 September 2026, representing year-on-year growth of 153.6% to 174.7%; revenue of approximately RMB2.079 billion, up about 46% year on year. On the first trading day after the profit alert, the company's share price rose nearly 9%. Against the backdrop of a maximum decline of about 70% in the preceding month, this single-day rebound appeared to be a forced correction of the market's prior pricing of "performance deceleration" in response to the profit alert. Foreign banks also quickly gave positive feedback: Citi said in a research report that Montage Technology's third-quarter preliminary results far exceeded expectations, reiterating a "Buy" rating with a target price of HK$425; Goldman Sachs also issued a research report maintaining a "Buy" rating with an H-share target price of HK$500. Institutional ratings echoed the profit alert data, further strengthening market expectations for a correction of the previously overly pessimistic pricing.

Breaking down the profit alert: what beat expectations was not just growth, but earnings quality

The market's first layer of expectation gap was on the profit side. Citi estimated that the midpoint of net profit of RMB1.2 billion to RMB1.3 billion was about 34% above both market consensus and the bank's own forecast; Goldman Sachs' estimate was more aggressive, with the median about 47% above market expectations. This means that in the roughly 70% maximum decline over the previous month, the assumption implied by pricing was "performance deceleration," while the actual data not only did not decelerate but accelerated: second-quarter revenue and net profit grew 32.85% and 81.46% year on year respectively, while in the third quarter they jumped to 46% and more than 153%. The slope of growth itself is the most direct tool for falsification. However, what is truly worth reading closely in this profit alert is not the 153% to 174% profit growth itself, but the source of profit elasticity. The announcement attributed growth to the rapid rollout of AI inference and Agent applications, with server CPU demand continuing to rise, driving overall demand for memory modules and interconnect chips; DDR5 memory interface and module companion chip shipments increased significantly, and the shipment share of third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation RCD chips further increased. Interconnect chip revenue in the quarter was approximately RMB2.047 billion, up 49.3% year on year and 20.9% quarter on quarter; the gross margin guidance was 68.0% to 68.5%, up 2.31 to 2.81 percentage points year on year, and continued to improve quarter on quarter. Citi viewed the gross margin performance as a direct alleviation of concerns over rising foundry costs. The implication of this set of data is that growth was not achieved by sacrificing price for volume, but was driven by product mix upgrading with both volume and price rising, and the improvement in earnings quality is more persuasive than revenue growth.

A deeper expectation gap occurred on the question of "what Montage Technology relies on for growth," which the market has long misread. Over the past several months, Montage Technology has been widely embedded in the "memory cycle" pricing framework: as earnings expectations for memory original manufacturers such as Samsung and SK Hynix fluctuated and memory spot price expectations wavered, the company, as a memory interface chip supplier, was swept into the "memory bear market" narrative. But in its post-profit-alert research report, Citi made a key distinction: Montage's memory interface business is mainly driven by CPU shipments and the number of memory channels, not memory prices.

After the 9% rebound: foreign capital moves first while the quality of recovery remains to be seen

If the profit alert addressed "whether performance falsifies the pessimistic narrative," then capital actions address "who is pricing and at what level." Hong Kong Stock Exchange disclosures showed that JPMorgan's long position in Montage Technology H shares rose from 7.06% to 7.35% on 15 October, an increase of 0.29 percentage points. Notably, this increase occurred before the profit alert announcement, in a window when the share price was still hovering at lows, rather than chasing the rally after the news landed. During the same period, the short position ratio also rose from 2.64% to 3.06%, indicating that foreign capital was not making a one-way bet, but chose to add to directional positions at the stage of strongest pessimism. After the profit alert, the share price rose nearly 9%, giving JPMorgan's early position a floating gain. Institutional ratings strengthened this judgment in sync after the profit alert. Goldman Sachs maintained "Buy," giving a target price of HK$500 for H shares and RMB377 for A shares; Citi reiterated "Buy," with an H-share target price of HK$425 and an A-share target price of RMB320; CLSA also maintained a "high-conviction outperform" rating. JPMorgan's increase and the target prices of several foreign banks together formed a dual validation of "fundamental anchor plus capital-market first move." However, a nearly 9% positive candle does not automatically equal a trend reversal. Among the causes of the previous month's decline, in addition to the sector-wide retreat in memory sentiment, there was another thread that has not fully dissipated: South Korean prosecutors launched an on-site antitrust search of Montage's Korea office in July, investigating whether it, along with Renesas and Rambus, colluded on prices when supplying Samsung and SK Hynix. Montage's announcement confirmed that it is fully cooperating with the investigation, and as of the disclosure date, neither the company nor its directors or employees had been formally accused, but it explicitly stated that "at this stage it is impossible to predict the timing and outcome of the investigation." This uncertainty remains a thin mist hanging over the valuation. In addition, the sustainability of AI infrastructure capital expenditure, potential adjustments in international customers' supply chain strategies, and the structural impact of alternative solutions such as SOCAMM and LPDDRX on memory interface demand are all risk variables listed by Citi alongside its bullish view. The rebound on the first trading day after the profit alert was not a solo performance by Montage Technology either; Hong Kong's memory and AI hardware sectors strengthened collectively that day, and the tailwind from sector beta provided a window for the stock's alpha to materialize. But after sector sentiment recedes, whether Montage Technology can continue to earn excess pricing based on the fundamentals anchored by the profit alert is the true yardstick for testing the quality of this recovery. JPMorgan raised its shareholding from 7.06% to 7.35% before the profit alert, having already cast a "first-mover vote" with real money; next, whether interconnect chip demand in the fourth quarter can fulfill management's further growth guidance will determine whether this 9% is an initial stitching of the valuation crack or the starting point of a new round of revaluation.
