The study found that NASA-designed space solar panels could lower the overall costs of the European power grid by as much as 15% and reduce reliance on battery storage, thereby enhancing the stability of energy supply. Led by King's College London, research introduced the concept of "Space-Based Solar Power Systems" (SBSP). Nonetheless, if these issues can be effectively addressed, space solar energy is expected to become a core force in the future energy market. Currently, some countries have already taken crucial steps. For example, Japan's local government supports the launch of a giant space solar array covering an area of 2 square kilometers, projected to achieve round-the-clock clean power generation with efficiency levels five to ten times that of ground-based solar panels, with each satellite generating up to 1 million kilowatts, equivalent to that of a nuclear power station. By 2025, Japan plans to launch its first experimental satellite weighing 180 kilograms, aiming to transmit 1 kilowatt of power to a ground antenna through low-orbit transmission, paving the way for commercialization. At the same time, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has successfully launched the first "Space Solar Demonstrator" (SSPD-1), showcasing the feasibility of transmitting low-orbit energy through microwaves.
