Power Battery Installations Climb 16% Year-on-Year to 334.7 GWh in First Half of 2026, GGII Data Shows

GGII data, based on mandatory traffic insurance statistics for new energy vehicles, indicates that combined sales of new energy passenger cars and commercial vehicles in the first half of 2026 reached approximately 5.108 million units, a 10% decline compared to the same period last year.

This drop occurred under the combined influence of the halved vehicle purchase tax exemption policy, market conditions, and seasonal factors. However, driven by a higher average battery capacity per vehicle in the new energy commercial vehicle segment, total power battery installations for the first half of 2026 stood at roughly 334.7 GWh, marking a 16% increase year-on-year.

New Energy Heavy Truck Battery Installations Near 60 GWh, Surging 89% Year-on-Year

By application area, the new energy passenger vehicle segment saw installations of approximately 252.3 GWh in the first half of 2026, a 5% increase year-on-year. The new energy bus segment recorded installations of about 3.1 GWh, up 2% year-on-year. The new energy commercial vehicle segment posted installations of around 79.3 GWh, a substantial 77% year-on-year jump.

Within the commercial vehicle category, new energy heavy trucks contributed nearly 60 GWh, representing an 89% increase year-on-year and accounting for 75.7% of the entire commercial vehicle market share.

LFP Battery Installations Command 80.3% Market Share

By battery chemistry, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) power battery installations totaled approximately 268.7 GWh in the first half of 2026, a 20% year-on-year rise. This secured an 80.3% share of the total, up 2.9 percentage points from the same period last year.

Ternary (NCM) power battery installations reached about 65.1 GWh, a 2% increase year-on-year. Combined ternary and lithium iron manganese phosphate (LMFP) installations were roughly 0.1 GWh, plummeting 88% year-on-year, primarily due to a sharp decline in the number of vehicles for models such as the Luxeed R7, Luxeed S7, Stelato S9, and Exeed Sterra ES that use this chemistry.

Soft Pack Battery Installations Continue to Decline, Holding Only 0.2% Market Share

By battery form factor, prismatic power battery installations in the first half of 2026 were approximately 327.2 GWh, a 17% year-on-year increase.

Soft pack power battery installations totaled about 0.8 GWh, a 52% decrease year-on-year. Cylindrical power battery installations reached roughly 6.7 GWh, an 8% growth year-on-year.
