HKEX Reports 8% Year-on-Year Increase in Average Daily Trading Value for March

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) released its market performance data for March. The market capitalization of the securities market reached HK$45.9 trillion at the end of March, a 15% increase compared to HK$40.0 trillion in the same period last year.

The average daily turnover for March was HK$304.0 billion, up 8% from HK$280.2 billion a year earlier. For the first three months of the year, the average daily turnover amounted to HK$276.7 billion, marking a 14% rise compared to HK$242.7 billion in the prior-year period.

In the first quarter, the average daily turnover for derivative warrants was HK$7.5 billion, a 1% increase from HK$7.4 billion last year. The average daily turnover for callable bull/bear contracts surged 40% to HK$13.9 billion, up from HK$9.9 billion a year ago. Exchange-traded funds saw an average daily turnover of HK$40.2 billion, a 15% increase compared to HK$35.0 billion in the same period last year. Leveraged and inverse products recorded an average daily turnover of HK$4.9 billion, up 11% from HK$4.4 billion.

There were 40 new listings in the first three months, a 135% increase compared to 17 listings in the prior-year period. Total funds raised through initial public offerings reached HK$109.9 billion, a significant 488% increase from HK$18.7 billion a year earlier. Total equity capital raised during the quarter amounted to HK$150.2 billion.

The average daily volume for futures and options in the first quarter was approximately 1.829 million contracts. The average daily volume for stock options was about 944,000 contracts. On March 27, the Hang Seng Biotech Index futures reached a record high daily volume of 1,239 contracts.
