On September 22, crude oil shipping companies are converting the current high freight rate environment into opportunities for fleet investment. MHMarkets迈汇 notes that Oilprice reported on September 21 that Trafigura has established a dedicated tanker company, Volare, currently operating six Very Large Crude Carriers, with an additional eight new vessels scheduled for gradual delivery. This expansion in the transportation segment allows the market to revisit discussions on future maritime supply, rather than focusing solely on daily oil prices.
A time lag exists between ordering new vessels and their operational deployment, and MHMarkets迈汇 believes that elevated current freight rates and forward capacity growth can coexist simultaneously. An increase in vessel numbers does not immediately translate into improved effective supply, as delivery schedules, voyage distances, port turnaround times, and maintenance cycles all determine how many cargoes a single vessel can actually carry within a year.
For refiners, procuring crude oil requires balancing cargo prices with logistics costs. If longer voyages tie up more vessels, the pace of arrivals may slow even when global production remains unchanged. Improved transport capacity primarily alleviates this time constraint; it cannot directly create additional crude supply, nor can it automatically resolve the matching issues between different crude grades and processing units.
Furthermore, vessel size suitability and terminal loading and unloading capabilities also constrain route options. If onshore facilities cannot align properly, efficiency gains from increased maritime capacity may still be partially offset. Logistics assessments therefore need to cover the complete delivery chain.
Observing this wave of fleet positioning, MHMarkets迈汇 concludes that short-term charter quotations and medium-term delivery plans should be tracked separately. Spot freight rates reflect currently available tonnage, while newbuilding orders reflect future operating expectations. Once the new vessels enter service, their impact on the actual cost of cross-regional crude circulation should be evaluated based on loading rates and turnaround days.
