From E-Commerce to Apparel Design: Ma Yun's Latest Gold Medal Venture

Following his retirement, Ma Yun has taken on an unexpected new role: designing uniforms for food delivery riders. And remarkably, this venture has already earned prestigious recognition.

At the 2026 French Design Award ceremony held in Paris yesterday, the urban courier uniform from Taobao Flash Purchase secured the gold prize. According to public reports, this marks the first time the award has been presented to a professional uniform designed for frontline workers since the accolade's inception.

What makes this story particularly intriguing is a detail that later emerged: Ma Yun played an in-depth role in the uniform's design process. Lead designer Yang Tao specifically acknowledged Ma Yun during the acceptance speech. According to Yang, the uniform concept originated from Ma Yun himself. During the design phase last summer, Ma Yun remained closely involved throughout the project, discussing issues like rider nighttime safety, long-duration riding comfort, and even personally testing fabrics and wearing prototypes. He reportedly checked design progress every evening.

One can easily imagine the scene: a group of executives in meetings about e-commerce, AI, and cloud computing, when Ma Yun suddenly sends a late-night message asking about the latest version of the delivery uniform. It certainly feels surreal.

However, examining the uniform itself reveals that it was never treated as an ordinary work garment. When Taobao Flash Purchase launched this urban courier uniform last year, the design team adopted a racing suit approach. The outfit emphasizes wind resistance, breathability, and water repellency, incorporates reflective night-safety elements, includes medical emergency supplies in the waist pack, and features information pockets on the sleeves. Previous reports noted that after riders tested the uniform and requested wider reflective strips, the design team continued refinements.

The result resembles a deliberate attempt to upgrade what could have been a budget delivery uniform into outdoor gear standards. Alibaba subsequently provided a complete free equipment replacement—including uniforms, helmets, and delivery boxes—to one million active stable riders nationwide. This thorough approach likely explains why the design reached the podium in France.

The design award judges clearly evaluated more than just appearance. French Design Award officials noted that the uniform improves safety and comfort through material selection, tailoring, and functional design, while establishing a clearer professional identity for riders. Previously, the typical image of delivery personnel involved yellow or blue jackets, helmets, and courier boxes. With this initiative, Taobao Flash Purchase aims to elevate the courier role into something resembling a true profession.

Beyond the design itself, this episode signals something notable: Ma Yun's engagement with Taobao Flash Purchase appears much deeper than widely assumed. In June 2025, Ma Yun was photographed visiting the Ele.me office alongside Alibaba CEO Wu Yongming, coinciding with Alibaba's restructuring that merged Ele.me and Fliggy into the China E-commerce Business Group. Outside sources indicated Ma Yun also participated in Taobao Flash Purchase's weekly meetings.

Looking back, between overseeing business operations and even weighing in on rider apparel, his involvement extends beyond a casual visit. Of course, Ma Yun has not resumed daily management responsibilities at Alibaba, so interpreting this as him retaking the helm would be inaccurate. Nonetheless, a pattern grows increasingly evident: this long-retired founder keeps reappearing across the company's product and operational details.

Ma Yun once concerned himself with how Taobao sold goods. Now, he even oversees what the people delivering those goods wear. And to top it off, his efforts have yielded a French design gold medal.
