On September 21, a special matchmaking event for agricultural machinery artificial intelligence involving universities and research institutions was held in Yongping, Yunnan Province. The event was designed to create a platform connecting academic institutions with agricultural machinery and communication enterprises, aiming to foster deep integration of AI technology development in agricultural machinery with real-world application scenarios.
Deputy Director General Jiang Xingming of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs presided over the event, which brought together experts, scholars, and representatives from agricultural machinery companies across the country. During the sessions, participants engaged in thorough discussions on topics such as AI technology research in agricultural machinery, commercialization of research outcomes, and dissemination and adoption strategies.
A consensus emerged among attendees that the convergence of artificial intelligence and agricultural robotics holds tremendous potential, particularly for application in hilly and mountainous terrains. There was strong support for accelerating the adoption of these technologies in such landscapes, so that intelligent farm equipment can more effectively serve the needs of plateau-featured agriculture. Zou Xiangjun, a committee member of the Agricultural Information Standardization Committee under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, drew on his own research to note the vast opportunities ahead. He highlighted several innovations ripe for promotion, including harvesting and seeding robots, unmanned paddy farms, and fruit-picking robots, all tailored for hillside agriculture. He further remarked on the great value of bringing complete mechanized walnut cultivation, management, and harvesting solutions to Yunnan.
Jiang Qijun, a PhD graduate of Wageningen University in the Netherlands and founder of Yunnan Cool Robotics Co., Ltd., spoke from an enterprise perspective. "Yongping is China's walnut capital, with vast orchard areas and renowned specialty products. The small-scale, electrified, intelligent, and unmanned nature of agricultural robots makes them an excellent fit for Yunnan's hilly and mountainous regions," he said. He expressed his aspiration to introduce intelligent machinery to Yongping, leveraging AI to enhance the efficiency of walnut cultivation, management, and harvesting. He also proposed using unmanned transport equipment to solve collection and hauling challenges, ultimately aiming to boost harvesting efficiency and moving quickly toward testing, promotion, and deployment across Yunnan.
In his closing remarks, Jiang Xingming pointed out that the application scenarios for agricultural machinery are dynamic, evolving, and ever-changing. He encouraged universities and research institutions to seize this momentum and secure a leading position in the deployment of agricultural machinery across rural Yunnan. He emphasized that successful implementation of AI in agricultural machinery requires three levels of commitment: setting high aspirations, maintaining persistent dedication, and achieving concrete results. He urged all parties to work steadily over the long term to bring intelligent agricultural machinery directly into the fields.
This event was centered on the mechanization and smart development needs of Yunnan's distinctive plateau agriculture, establishing a vital bridge for deeper cooperation among universities, research bodies, agricultural machinery companies, and communication firms. In the next phase, all stakeholders will accelerate the application of agricultural machinery AI technologies in industries such as walnut farming, helping to enhance agricultural productivity and quality throughout the province.
