A 26-year-old trader in Hong Kong’s Central financial district has been arrested on suspicion of theft, following the discovery of a major fund misappropriation case. The incident reportedly involved the unauthorized use of company funds to make a highly speculative bet.
Between January 9 and July 20 this year, the trader allegedly diverted HK$50 million from his firm. He then used this capital to secure margin financing through a related institution, before purchasing a 2x leveraged exchange-traded fund (ETF) tied to SK hynix. This created a double-leverage effect, magnifying both potential gains and losses.
The leveraged ETF, which tracks the performance of the South Korean chipmaker, has plummeted by more than 70% from its all-time high in late June. As the positions remain open, the final loss figure is still subject to change, though it is currently estimated at around HK$150 million.
How was this uncovered?
The irregularity was brought to light during a recent audit by Chefu Management, the wealth management firm that employed the trader. While Chefu Securities, a related entity under the same Chefu Group, quickly issued a statement attempting to distance itself, noting that Chefu Management is not a Securities and Futures Commission (SFC)-licensed corporation but merely an unlicensed wealth management investment company, the incident has rattled client confidence.
Client withdrawals follow the scandal
In the wake of the news, a number of clients have reportedly chosen to withdraw funds from Chefu Securities as a risk management measure, seeking to avoid potential exposure to any further fallout from the affair. The case remains under police investigation.
