Tesla's Tao Lin: The Black on Tesla Cars Is Truly Not Simple

Deep News16:11

On January 23, Tao Lin, Vice President of Tesla Motors, stated that many people think black car paint is all quite similar, but the black used by Tesla is truly not simple.

Tao Lin explained that the Starlight Black paint incorporates ultra-fine glass microspheres, each with a diameter of just one micron, with over a million particles per square meter, layered with a triple-layer pearlescent mica structure. This allows the car body to exhibit a rich sense of depth under different lighting conditions, rather than appearing as a flat, uniform black. Especially in sunlight, it refracts subtle hints of deep blue or bluish-purple metallic sparkle, resembling a flowing galaxy across the vehicle's surface.

She emphasized that it is not just about aesthetics; the Starlight Black finish is also more durable. Minor scratches from everyday items like keys or branches are less likely to leave visible marks. Additionally, it offers superior oxidation resistance, maintaining a bright and clean appearance even after years of use.

"Every seemingly simple detail on a Tesla vehicle is the result of highly coordinated efforts in original design, engineering capability, and the manufacturing system."
