According to sources familiar with the matter, Anthropic has entered into a computing capacity agreement with Bitcoin mining company Riot Platforms, valued at $9.1 billion. This deal highlights the race among leading global AI model developers to secure computing power to meet customer demand.

Riot has recently begun selling AI data center computing resources. The company disclosed on Monday that it had signed a 20-year agreement with a "leading frontier AI" company, providing 191 megawatts of data center capacity from its Rockdale, Texas facility. Sources who requested anonymity due to the private nature of the information identified the client as Anthropic. Riot Platforms declined to comment, while Anthropic has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Anthropic has secured several computing capacity agreements with AI cloud providers in recent months. The company recently inked a $10 billion deal with Volta Infra, an AI infrastructure startup founded just months ago, and in May this year agreed to pay nearly $45 billion over three years to SpaceX for computing resources.

Riot disclosed that the agreement with the leading frontier AI company runs through June 2048 and is expected to generate $9.1 billion in revenue. The contract includes two five-year extension options, which could bring Riot's total revenue to as much as $16.1 billion if fully exercised.
