Greenland Minerals Ltd announced on Tuesday that it has commissioned WSP Denmark to proceed with environmental baseline studies at the Sarfartoq rare earth project in southwest Greenland, marking a significant step towards a future environmental impact assessment.
WSP Denmark previously completed the first year of environmental baseline work for the Sarfartoq project in 2023 for Neo North Star Resources. This work encompassed terrestrial, freshwater, marine and fisheries sampling, flow monitoring, and ecological surveys, all conducted in accordance with Greenland's Mineral Sector EIA guidelines. The 2026 environmental field program will focus on follow-up baseline work and monitoring activities, including supplementary sampling and data collection across various environmental receptors. Greenland typically requires multi-year baseline surveys to adequately understand natural variation before any potential development activities commence.
Greenland Minerals' President, Bo Møller Stensgaard, stated: "We are very pleased to continue our collaboration with WSP Denmark on the Sarfartoq project. The same experienced team currently supporting environmental work at the Skaergaard project in East Greenland also completed the first year of environmental baseline studies at Sarfartoq in 2023, ensuring strong project familiarity and continuity. In our view, initiating the second year of baseline studies is an important milestone for the Sarfartoq project and will form a crucial part of the project's environmental foundation."
The Sarfartoq project is a carbonatite-hosted rare earths project in southwest Greenland, primarily focused on the rare earth elements neodymium and praseodymium, which are widely used in the manufacture of permanent magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense systems. Historical work on the project includes a mineral resource estimate for the ST1 area and a preliminary economic assessment report completed in 2011. Greenland Minerals' acquisition of the project remains subject to the formal completion of the previously announced transaction.
