Emerging market equities advanced at the start of the week, buoyed by a surge in heavyweight technology stocks fueled by optimism around a novel artificial intelligence model, which successfully counterbalanced the negative sentiment stemming from rising oil prices.
The MSCI Emerging Markets Index climbed as much as 1.4% on Monday, reaching its highest level since June 26. South Korea's KOSPI index rallied sharply, surging more than 3%. Concurrently, the emerging market currency index inched up 0.1%, marking its 12th gain in the past 13 trading sessions.
Within the broader index, the technology sector delivered the strongest performance, riding the coattails of Friday's rally in US chip stocks. That momentum was ignited by OpenAI's announcement of its next-generation technology, GPT-6, which the company hailed as a critical milestone in the journey toward artificial general intelligence.
Conversely, most other sectors witnessed declines, pressured by rising oil prices following mutual attacks on tankers by US and Iranian forces near the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, robust US employment data have led market participants to increasingly price in the possibility of a near-term interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.
According to Wee Khoon Chong, Senior Asia-Pacific Market Strategist at BNY Mellon in Hong Kong, the stellar gains in tech behemoths have overshadowed the headwinds created by escalating crude prices. "Friday's strong tech rally lifted the KOSPI, Taiwan's stock market, and the Nikkei, significantly boosting sentiment across the region," he noted.
