Changsha to Construct New River-Crossing Bridge

Deep News03-01

A new river-crossing passage will be added across the Xiangjiang River. According to relevant replies and plans from the Hunan Provincial Department of Transportation, the Changsha Nanheng Expressway Bridge over the Xiangjiang River will be located at Xingmazhou in Changsha, south of the Changsha Olympic Sports Center. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2026 and be completed before the 16th National Games in 2029. This bridge represents a key step in integrating the cities of Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan.

The bridge will span the southern part of Xingmazhou, with its eastern side near the Muyun Station of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Intercity Railway and its western side connecting to the Xiangjiang ZhiChuang Center. Xingmazhou, situated in the southwestern part of Nantuo Subdistrict, Tianxin District, Changsha, is the first major island in the Xiangjiang River after it passes Zhaoshan Mountain. Currently, the island has a resident population of about 1,000 people, who have long relied on ferries for transportation.

According to the plan, the current situation is expected to change with the construction of the Changsha Nanheng Expressway Bridge over the Xiangjiang River. The proposal includes widening the main bridge and adding auxiliary roads on both sides, which will connect to Xiangjiang Avenue and Xingmazhou. Once completed, the bridge will significantly improve transportation convenience for island residents, bringing new changes to this "hidden paradise."

The significance of the bridge is further highlighted by Hunan's successful bid to host the 16th National Games in 2029 and the commencement of construction on the Changsha Olympic Sports Center. The bridge will serve as a critical east-west link to ease traffic flow around the Olympic Sports Center and lay the foundation for hosting large-scale cultural and sports events in the long term. It will also better connect the Changsha Olympic Sports New City and the Xiangjiang Science City, promoting the flow of talent, capital, and other resources between the two areas.

An artist's rendering of the Changsha Olympic Sports Center was provided by the Changsha City Development Group. The new bridge will enhance connectivity across the Xiangjiang River, further integrating the three cities of Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan.
