Hang Seng Indexes: AI-linked Stocks Represent Just 7% of HK Market Cap, Thematic Indices Offer a Route into Tech Opportunities

Stock News21:16

According to a flagship index series research report from Hang Seng Indexes, the structure of Hong Kong's equity market reveals a notable gap in technology exposure when compared to other major Asia-Pacific bourses. The report highlights the varying use cases for broad-based versus thematic indices, particularly for investors seeking to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom.

As of the end of July 2026, the information technology sector's weight in the Hong Kong market had climbed to 17%, a cumulative increase of six percentage points over the past two years, largely driven by the growth of the AI industry. Across the entire market, AI-related stocks account for roughly 7% of total market capitalization, with approximately 200 such stocks among the more than 2,400 mainboard listings. The Hong Kong market is predominantly shaped by three sectors: financials, which hold a 31% weight, non-essential consumer goods at 13%, and information technology. This composition contrasts sharply with regional peers, where tech sector weighting varies significantly; Taiwan's market leads with information technology at 78%, followed by South Korea at 58%, while mainland China and Japan stand at 26% and 25% respectively, leaving Hong Kong's 17% on the lower end of the spectrum.

The report points out that a higher overall technology sector weight in a market typically correlates with a larger weighting for AI supply chain stocks, but such heavy concentration can also amplify market volatility. Data indicates that Hong Kong's annualized volatility stands at approximately 19%, compared to around 27% for Taiwan and a much higher 52% for South Korea. The Hang Seng Index, being a broad-based benchmark, is designed to reflect the overall performance of the Hong Kong market rather than focusing on any single technology track. For investors aiming to precisely target technological and AI opportunities in the city, the report suggests turning to specialized thematic indices, such as the Hang Seng Tech Index or the Hang Seng Artificial Intelligence Theme Index, the latter of which has an information technology sector weight exceeding 90%.

Hang Seng Indexes noted that it maintains a comprehensive suite of 35 technology-related indices, covering the full value chain from hardware electronics and AI computing power to automation and robotics. Broad-based indices are suitable for gauging the general market trend, while sector and thematic indices are better positioned to capture structural opportunities within specific industries. Investors are encouraged to select the appropriate benchmark based on their individual investment objectives.
