Lisa Su, CEO of chip giant Advanced Micro Devices, delivered a keynote address at the AMD AI Developer Day in Shanghai this week, where she highlighted the significance and innovative capacity of Chinese developers within what she described as "the world's most vibrant AI ecosystem." She forecasted that the number of global daily AI users will surge from 1 billion to 5 billion within the next five years, by 2030. Su emphasized that AI will become ubiquitous, and with the advent of the agent AI era, the strategic importance of CPUs is increasing, enabling broader access to AI technology.
Su's visit to China included meetings in Beijing, where she expressed her honor at being in the country and underscored the critical importance of the Chinese market. In discussions with Chinese officials, she noted that computing power is central to AMD's business and expressed appreciation for the strong, collaborative relationships with major Chinese partners in this field. She conveyed a consistent desire to deepen and expand cooperation across more domains.
In this new phase of accelerating AI adoption, AMD is actively seeking to embed itself more deeply into China's dynamic AI ecosystem by strengthening local partnerships.
Su detailed AMD's long-term strategic foundation in China during her Shanghai speech, noting that the company has been operating in the country for over three decades. China is a crucial component in shaping AMD's development roadmap, encompassing areas from chips and AI software to engineering platforms.
Regarding R&D investment, Su revealed that AMD's Greater China R&D centers employ over 4,000 engineers, with the Shanghai center being one of the largest globally for the company. She stressed that AMD's investment extends beyond R&D alone, truly spanning every layer of the technology stack, including silicon and software systems, to facilitate collaboration with some of the world's leading AI practitioners.
Speaking about the Chinese market, Su used positive language, stating, "The most exciting aspect of the Chinese ecosystem is that it is a place that truly understands open innovation, a very special case study."
In her address, Su provided a specific forecast for the pace of AI adoption. She mentioned that the current global daily AI user base exceeds 1 billion and is expected to grow to 5 billion within five years, by 2030, making AI "everywhere" in the future.
She also pointed out that significant progress has been made in the AI field just in the past five months, particularly in the direction of AI agents. With the arrival of agent AI, the strategic importance of CPUs is growing concurrently. AMD stated it is committed to accelerating the momentum of AI development this year.
Following her speech, Su engaged in a dialogue with Kai-Fu Lee, founder and CEO of 01.AI and Chairman of Sinovation Ventures, on the "new paradigm of AI agents." Lee remarked that this new paradigm driven by agent AI marks the industry's entry into a new stage of autonomous execution, representing the greatest opportunity for transformation for current AI industry players and enterprises.
