The United Arab Emirates is considering pouring up to 1 trillion yen (equivalent to $6.3 billion) into constructing an artificial intelligence data center in Japan, according to sources familiar with the matter. The Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala Investment Company, is expected to spearhead a 500-megawatt project in Akita Prefecture, located in northern Japan, with potential involvement from other domestic and international investors. The details have not yet been disclosed to the public.
If completed, this facility could become the largest data center in Japan. The ongoing discussions with the Gulf nation highlight a growing global trend of placing critical AI assets in countries that are relatively insulated from geopolitical conflicts. A spokesperson for Mubadala Investment Company declined to comment on the matter.
Previous reports had indicated the UAE's plans to establish a data center in Akita Prefecture. The insider noted that the total investment, including suppliers and other businesses planning to operate in the surrounding area, could reach as high as 2 trillion yen. A consortium of Japanese companies is expected to handle construction and related infrastructure, the source added.
