The 2026 new energy vehicle promotion initiative for rural areas, organized by five departments including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Commerce, is set to launch soon, according to a notice issued on June 18.
A total of 155 vehicle models are included in the published list for this campaign, spanning traditional domestic brands, joint ventures, and new automakers, and covering categories such as micro commuter cars, plug-in hybrid family SUVs, and economical pure electric sedans.
Notably, the list features popular market models like the Tesla Model 3, Xiaomi SU7, XPeng M03, and Tank 300, alongside more affordable small and micro electric vehicles such as the Chery Ant and Wuling Hongguang.
The campaign, themed "Green, Low-Carbon, Smart, Safe – Intelligent Travel Across Thousands of Counties, Green Benefits for Millions of Rural Homes," will select new energy vehicles that meet rural usage needs and have good reputations and reliable quality.
It will implement supportive policies including vehicle purchase and vessel tax reductions, as well as improvements to charging and swapping infrastructure in county-level areas, aiming to actively boost new energy vehicle consumption in rural regions.
Furthermore, the 2026 initiative will advance vehicle trade-in programs in rural areas by establishing dedicated trade-in zones, allowing rural consumers who trade in for a new energy vehicle to apply for subsidies without quantity restrictions.
An analysis of the vehicle list shows broad coverage with clear highlights. Established micro pure electric models like the Wuling Hongguang and Chery Ant are all included; these vehicles, typically priced between 30,000 and 60,000 yuan, are compact, easy to park, and offer sufficient range for daily errands and short trips, making them ideal for county and township travel.
The hybrid segment includes models like the Roewe D7 DMH, Shanhai L7 PLUS, and several FAW Hongqi PHEV models, which address range anxiety, offer excellent fuel efficiency, and are suited for longer rural journeys, complementing pure electric vehicles where charging infrastructure may be lacking.
Additionally, the list covers several high-sales-volume models. The inclusion of popular vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, Xiaomi SU7, Nio Firefly, and XPeng M03 is aimed at attracting younger consumer groups.
Joint venture new energy models such as FAW-Volkswagen's ID series, SAIC-Audi's E5, and Toyota's bZ series are also included, breaking the previous pattern of rural markets being dominated by domestic brands and allowing county-level consumers access to joint venture new energy products at lower costs.
Furthermore, major domestic brands including BYD, Geely, GAC Aion, and Changan have contributed a diverse range of models covering scenarios from single-person commuting to family use with multiple members.
Industry observers believe this large-scale rural vehicle promotion policy will effectively stimulate the overall automotive market. With new energy vehicle penetration rates in first- and second-tier cities already high and growth space narrowing, county and rural markets have become the core new growth frontier for the industry.
The inclusion of hundreds of models across different price points and energy types, coupled with supporting measures like purchase subsidies and improved charging infrastructure, is expected to effectively unlock demand from township households for first-time purchases and vehicle upgrades.
