On February 1st, JD.com announced a new industry standard for dishwasher capacity, developed in collaboration with authoritative bodies including the China Standardization Association and China Home Appliance Testing & Certification Institute (Beijing) Co., Ltd., alongside leading brands such as Siemens, Midea, Haier, Fotile, and Robam.
The new standard completely abandons the vague concept of "place settings" and instead establishes a clear, quantifiable, and comparable new labeling system based on "internal volume (liters) + key installation dimensions." This provides consumers with definitive purchasing criteria, enabling more precise capacity matching, more certain installation planning, and more transparent buying decisions.
Specifically, the standard uses the effective volume rate R (= volume ÷ size) as the core measurement metric, creating a tiered system: Level 1 (R ≥ 60%), Level 2 (58% ≤ R < 60%), and Level 3 (R < 58%). A higher level indicates a greater proportion of usable space within the same external dimensions, meaning the appliance is more "capable of holding and washing" and better suited for washing more items in a single load, reducing the need for multiple cycles. Furthermore, to ensure the standard genuinely aids consumer decision-making, JD.com will add a special identifier on the product pages for high-quality dishwashers with an effective volume rate exceeding 60%.
A JD.com Home Appliances & Home Furnishings executive stated that the goal of this standard upgrade is to transform capacity expression from a "conceptual" notion into something "comparable and verifiable." This allows consumers to make purchasing decisions based on clear information rather than guesswork, providing a transparent, reliable, and easy-to-understand unified benchmark. For the industry, this also signifies that competition will increasingly focus on the genuine user experience, encouraging manufacturers to continuously optimize internal structural design and loading efficiency, innovate around the specific pain points of Chinese kitchens, promote healthier and higher-quality industry development, and facilitate the smoother integration of dishwashers into the daily lives of Chinese families.
