This decision follows recent workforce reductions within the company's Reality Labs division. Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday that it will discontinue the Horizon Worlds service for its VR headset users. The VR social network will continue to operate via its mobile application. However, starting in June, users accessing the service through Meta Quest headsets will no longer be able to create, publish, or update virtual worlds. Horizon Worlds was once a central component of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision for the metaverse. Since its launch, the platform has faced scrutiny over child safety and content moderation issues, while its cartoonish avatars have also drawn criticism. In January of this year, Meta implemented layoffs affecting approximately 1,500 employees in its Reality Labs unit. This division is responsible for virtual and mixed reality products, including Horizon Worlds and the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
