HK Opening Bell | Tech Index Slips Below 4,000; Chip Names Retreat; Lenovo Falls 4%

HK Opening Bell09:23

1. Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index opened lower at 23,513.79, shedding 0.58%, while the China Enterprises Index slipped 0.70% to 7,887.51. Most attention centred on the Hang Seng Tech Index, which lost 1.15% to 3,949.02—dropping below the psychologically important 4,000 mark right out of the gate. Early price action points to a cautious tone as investors rotate away from growth counters.

Risk-off flows were especially visible in large-cap internet and semiconductor counters, whereas select industrial and shipping names bucked the trend. Autos and consumer plays traded mixed, with EV makers under mild pressure.

5. Opening Summary

The Hong Kong market began the session on the back foot, dragged lower by heavyweight technology names and broader growth concerns. The Hang Seng Tech Index’s slip below 4,000 sharpened risk aversion, and both the blue-chip Hang Seng and HSCEI tracked lower.

Large-cap platforms were firmly offered: Lenovo tumbled over 4% after a weak earnings outlook from global peers, while JD.com and Alibaba each fell around 2%. Tencent, Meituan and NetEase also extended recent softness. Only niche AI chipmaker ILUVATAR and specialty AI play Z.AI managed modest upticks.

Outside mega-caps, 51WORLD surged more than 4% at the open, leading gainers on renewed smart-city optimism. Conversely, biotech group Axera and drug developer Zai Lab slid over 4%, keeping the health-care complex under pressure.

Sector rotation favoured selective industrial and shipping counters such as Sany International and TS Lines, while chipmakers and sportswear lagged. No major IPOs debuted this morning, but traders remain alert to upcoming listings amid a cautious macro backdrop.
