Amazon.com and Meta Platforms, Inc. have entered into a significant agreement, demonstrating their commitment to massively scaling artificial intelligence infrastructure. Under the terms of the deal, Meta plans to deploy tens of millions of Amazon's in-house developed Graviton chips to provide computational power for its increasingly vast AI systems.
These are not standard processors. The latest Graviton5 model is specifically engineered for heavy workloads such as real-time inference, search, and processing complex multi-step tasks, which are becoming central to contemporary AI applications. As AI workloads shift more from training to deployment, CPUs are assuming a more critical role in AI computing.
Furthermore, this agreement diversifies Meta's sources of computational resources, reducing its reliance on a single chip supplier. This move reflects a broader trend among technology giants: rather than depending solely on NVIDIA GPUs, they are actively deploying Arm-based, internally developed CPUs to optimize both cost and performance.
On a deeper level, Amazon.com is positioning its custom silicon as a core component of its cloud services strategy. Agreements of this nature indicate that this strategy is gaining market acceptance.
