The Trump administration has proposed that Europe resume purchasing Russian natural gas as part of a Ukraine peace agreement, a move that would deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenue to Moscow and help it regain economic influence.
U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Witkoff have discussed restarting Russian gas pipelines that transit through Ukraine, and are also considering reviving the Nord Stream pipeline.
American investors could also receive a share of the profits.
Germany strongly opposes the proposal, warning that renewed dependence on Russian energy would threaten European security.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, by contrast, supports resuming imports as a way to lower energy prices.
