Emerging channels are rapidly capturing consumers' time and attention, both of which are key drivers of commercial growth today.
According to the latest NielsenIQ research, as many as 77% of food and beverage consumers expect "self-pleasing and emotional value" when shopping. Paying for "instant emotions" has evolved from an add-on to a core driver of purchase decisions.
As instant retail expands from food delivery and emergency restocking to all categories and all scenarios of daily consumption, brands seeking growth can no longer rely on the traditional "selling goods" logic. Instead, they urgently need to co-create solutions with platforms across the entire ecosystem from product planning to last-mile fulfillment, capturing and delivering value within the "golden 30 minutes" triggered by consumer emotions, and converting every fleeting impulse into a long-term choice.
Recently, Nielsen Holdings PLC (NLSN), operating as NIQ, released its "2026 Instant Retail Moment Management White Paper -- Orange Moments, Let Growth Happen at Every Moment." Drawing on retail monitoring, consumer surveys, and brand practices, the report notes that instant retail has moved from 1.0 efficiency competition to 2.0 value competition.
The report systematically identifies eight priority business moments and the "I-DO-MOMENT" methodology, providing a panoramic growth guide for established brands seeking breakthroughs and emerging brands looking to ride the wave.
Channel Value Leap: Instant Retail Opens High-Value Growth Space for Brands
The report shows that against a backdrop of a 0.9% year-on-year decline in total FMCG omnichannel sales and pressure on offline channels, online channels grew 10.5% year on year, while sales on leading instant retail platforms surged 22.9% year on year, demonstrating strong channel resilience and growth momentum.
For brands seeking breakthroughs, especially emerging brands, fast-growing instant retail platforms represented by Taobao Flash Purchase are becoming strategic energy channels to capture consumer attention and achieve leapfrog growth.
More notably, instant retail is not a simple replication of offline product assortments but an ecosystem co-creation arena that reshapes supply structures. NIQ research shows that the average overlap between instant retail and offline channel Top 100 SKUs is only 48%, with as much as 81% of category growth driven by "non-overlapping" differentiated products.
Meanwhile, premium products account for 24% of instant retail sales share, with differentiated premium products contributing 55% of incremental growth. High-value categories such as personal care and alcoholic beverages are accelerating their penetration.
This means instant retail brings not just additional sales entry points but opportunities for brands to create new incremental value through differentiated products, real-time combinations, and exclusive supply.
Taking the beer industry as an example, as drinking motivations shift from traditional business entertainment to emotional healing, solo drinking, small gatherings, and late-night tipsiness, instant retail is becoming a core channel for premium alcoholic beverage consumption.
On the Taobao Flash Purchase platform, for instance, among the mainstream 25-40 age consumer group, high-ticket beer consumption already accounts for over 50%.
In the first half of this year, China Resources Beer's Snow Beer achieved over 160% year-on-year growth on Taobao Flash Purchase, with Heineken, Lao Xue, Hong Jue, and other premium and above products seeing rapid sales growth. China Resources Beer's premiumization strategy and Taobao Flash Purchase are accelerating their integration.
Consumers' willingness to pay a premium also confirms this channel's value potential. The report finds that in categories such as pets, maternal and baby, sports and outdoor, fresh produce, and alcoholic beverages, 35% to 39% of consumers are willing to pay a premium compared to offline channels.
As 30-minute fulfillment becomes standard on platforms, consumers are willing to pay for the certainty of "getting it right now" and a high-quality lifestyle.
However, a new question emerges: how can brands identify truly worthwhile long-term growth opportunities from a multitude of scattered, fleeting demands?
When 77% of Consumers Pay for Instant Emotions: From Managing Demand to Managing Moments
The report argues that instant retail in the past primarily served already-clear purchase demands. As supply and fulfillment capabilities mature, platforms can further intervene upstream in demand formation, discovering and capturing potential needs at the moments when consumer states change, emotions fluctuate, and life scenarios shift.
Scenarios answer "why buy," emotions and states answer "why buy now," and instant supply converts "want it now" into action in real time.
NIQ research shows that while instant retail shopping motivations form a "functional plus emotional" dual drive across all categories, two categories -- alcoholic beverages (96% emotional motivation vs. 92% functional) and flowers and gifts (93% emotional vs. 79% functional) -- have emotional drivers that even exceed functional ones.
Based on this, some instant retail platforms have begun proposing "moments" as the smallest demand management unit, centering on four major themes -- "stabilize life, improve feelings, amplify emotions, open boundaries" -- and distilling eight high-potential emotional entry points: reassurance, replenishment, self-pleasing, efficiency, excitement, ritual, on-the-go, and novelty-seeking -- the "Orange Moments."
Many brands have already co-created with Taobao Flash Purchase full-chain solutions around "Orange Moments" covering "emotional trigger -- supply combination -- instant fulfillment," converting emotional peaks within the "golden 30 minutes" into business growth.
During the summer Qingdao International Beer Festival, Taobao Flash Purchase partnered with Tsingtao Beer to create "Tsingtao Moments," and simultaneously linked with Yili's "Sour Milk x Ice Factory CP" "Ice Cool Moments" and five major brands including Wrigley's for time-segmented customized marketing, leveraging media and supermarket-restaurant-retail resonance to achieve an average peak-day GMV increase of 71% across the five brands and a surge of over 15 million in AIPL audience assets.
Around emotional touchpoints, Mars Dove leveraged art collaborations and beauty crossovers to ignite the Qixi "Ritual Moment," with same-day business surging 242% year on year. Mondelez used "Oreo Stride's First Sweet Bite of Autumn" to tap into the Start of Autumn solar term ritual, linking celebrity merchandise and shopping district big screens to achieve hundreds of millions of exposures and a single-day business scale leap.
In the "On-the-Go Moment" that expands life's radius, Chando focused on summer after-sun repair, using dual spokespersons to build momentum for hero product benefits, boosting peak-day brand GMV by 30 times year on year.
In the "Novelty Moment" that fulfills curiosity, Ambpomial linked with celebrities to launch new products with free ice cream molds at convenience stores, achieving 45% year-on-year business growth on the launch day.
Mengniu's "Breakfast Moment" co-built with the platform confirms the long-term value of high-frequency daily moments. The two parties cross-sector collaborated with Tianjin breakfast buns and convenience store breakfast combinations, connecting the "dining plus retail plus instant fulfillment" chain to meet the hurried morning demand for "convenience and peace of mind," achieving a 155% year-on-year increase in ordering users during the campaign period and a 780% surge in business, successfully converting short-term campaign awareness into stable repeat purchases at fixed time slots.
From "Can Buy" to "Choose Deliberately": Methodology Builds Sustainable Brand Moment Assets
Zhou Lingqing, Managing Director of NIQ China, pointed out: "When impulse and emotional triggers become the starting point of purchase, brands are required to integrate moment insights into product planning, inventory deployment, and fulfillment coordination, bringing supply closer to the moment when demand occurs."
The purpose of "Orange Moments" is to help brands precipitate the awareness formed during bursts into daily operations, turning fleeting demand windows into sustainable growth entry points.
To help brands systematically convert a single "paying for instant emotions" purchase into a long-term customer relationship, the report formally proposes the "I-DO-MOMENT" moment management methodology: Identify -- identifying proprietary moments worth managing from scenario imperatives, emotional resonance, consumption states, and trigger signals; Design -- converting insights into integrated solutions of emotionally charged product combinations, moment benefits, marketing content, and fulfillment; Own -- validating through both mind share and business results, observing whether consumers will preferentially think of, choose, and repurchase the brand when similar emotions and needs arise again, ultimately precipitating into reusable, scalable "Moment Assets."
This also corresponds to a three-layer path of consumer mind building: first, satisfying urgent physical needs so consumers "can buy"; then, forming repeat purchases through stable supply and emotional resonance so consumers "habitually buy"; and finally, becoming the first choice when similar emotions and situations are triggered again, so consumers "choose deliberately."
From efficiency competition to value creation, instant retail is becoming new infrastructure for brands to enter consumers' real lives. Short-term campaigns can create a traffic peak, but only by understanding emotions and deeply cultivating high-frequency, repeatable "moments" can brands build a moat that endures across cycles.
