Renewable Hydrogen Production Capacity in China Surpasses 1.4 Million Tonnes Per Annum

The National Energy Administration has released the China Hydrogen Energy Development Report (2026).

In 2025, global hydrogen production and consumption reached approximately 109 million tonnes, an increase of about 3% year-on-year. Production of hydrogen from renewable sources is progressing toward large-scale commercial application, with cumulative installed capacity reaching around 500,000 tonnes per year. China and Europe together contributed more than 70% of the world's renewable hydrogen capacity.

China's hydrogen industry has achieved notable progress in recent years, with renewable hydrogen production capacity steadily expanding. As of June 2026, the country's total renewable hydrogen production capacity—both built and under construction—exceeded 1.4 million tonnes per annum. Of this, over 270,000 tonnes per year is already operational, while more than 1.13 million tonnes per year is under construction. Electrolysis of water remains the primary production method.

Hydrogen infrastructure is also developing steadily. By June, China had constructed approximately 620 hydrogen refueling stations. Several ports are now equipped with green ammonia or green methanol bunkering capabilities, and the total length of operational pure hydrogen pipelines has surpassed 350 kilometres.
