Chen Wenying, an esteemed professor and dedicated educator at the Beijing Film Academy's Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, passed away on May 18, 2026, after an illness. She was 55 years old.
Chen Wenying was born in April 1971 in Zhejiang province. She earned her bachelor's degree from the Chinese Department of Zhejiang Normal University in 1994 and her master's degree from the Chinese Department of Beijing Normal University in 1997. She began her teaching career at the Beijing Film Academy in August of that same year, dedicating nearly three decades to teaching and research in the fields of humanities and arts education. From December 2007 to September 2008, she was a visiting scholar at the University of London. She retired in April 2026.
Throughout her career, Chen Wenying focused on the humanistic nature of arts education. She emphasized that art should reflect the soul and spiritual pursuits of humanity and advocated for an educational approach that cultivates independent creators capable of expressing their personal life experiences through art.
Her scholarly contributions include several influential publications, such as "New University Chinese Reader" (China Film Press, 2011), "This Isn't Fun—Original Fiction Collection of the 2014 Undergraduate Directing Class" (China Film Press, 2018), "Moonstone—Original Fiction Collection of the 2016 Ada Experimental Animation Class" (China Film Press, 2019), and "Top Artistic Talents—Original Fiction Collection of the Ada Animation Experimental Class" (Ocean Press, 2023). These works represent a valuable legacy for the academy's general humanities education and the cultivation of artistic talent.
