Where the market landed
September 4th saw all key A-share benchmarks close in negative territory, with an afternoon selloff erasing earlier gains. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.30% to 3930.12, the Shenzhen Component shed 0.79% to 13516.97, the ChiNext lost 0.78% to 3286.55, while the STAR 50 tumbled 2.10% to 1577.36 and the Beijing Stock Exchange 50 dipped 0.10% to 1087.64. Turnover on the two main exchanges reached 2.03 trillion yuan, up sharply by 271.72 billion from the prior session. Breadth was negative with 2,444 advancers versus 2,914 decliners, and 42 stocks hitting the upper limit while 9 hit the lower limit.
Sector divergence takes center stage
Leading the gains were pork, aquaculture, CSSC-related marine equipment, baijiu, advertising and marketing, real estate services, and crop farming. On the losing side, semiconductors, electronic chemicals, lithography equipment, memory chips, components, and CPO-related names pulled the market down. The STAR 50 index led the decline at -2.10%, while the Shanghai Semiconductor sector fell 2.85%. The afternoon session saw all major indices turn red simultaneously, with the Shanghai, Shenzhen, and ChiNext benchmarks all giving up their intraday advances. Turnover expansion of more than 270 billion yuan pointed to active but cautious positioning, with clear rotation away from recent momentum leaders.
What drove the action
Four key forces shaped the session. First, a broad pullback across all major indices with the STAR 50 suffering the steepest drop. Second, the notable surge in turnover as investors repositioned. Third, strong sector rotation as defensive and thematic groups like pork, aquaculture, CSSC affiliates, and baijiu outperformed, while tech-oriented sectors including semiconductors, electronic chemicals, lithography, memory, and CPO fell out of favor. And fourth, an appearance from OpenAI with its GPT-6 Astra announcement, which sparked activity in AI application and advertising-marketing names despite the overall market weakness.
The day's notable movers
Pork and aquaculture surged to the top of the board with Luoniushan, New Wufeng, Zhenghong Science, and New Hope all hitting their daily uplimit. Tangrenshen, Tecon Biology, and Jumu Agriculture also posted strong gains, lifting the broader agricultural complex including feed and fishery names.
CSSC system stocks advanced as the marine equipment sector climbed 6.49%, ranking among the top industry gainers. Notably, China State Shipbuilding jumped 9.18%, and it recorded the largest net inflow of main capital among all stocks marketwide.
AI application plays found a catalyst with the OpenAI announcement. Epoint rose 11.12%, BlueFocus gained 5.91%, and Tianyu Digital climbed 8.75%, with the ChatGPT concept seeing renewed buying interest.
Semiconductor chain led the downside with Hua Hong falling 8.88%, Guoke Micro dropping 9.97%, and Qiangyi losing 10.23%. Inspur Information hit its daily limit down. The broader segment covering electronic chemicals, lithography equipment, memory chips, components, and CPO all suffered steep losses. Given the strong rallies these sectors had posted earlier, Wednesday's pullback reflects a pronounced rotation away from recent winners.
Trading data showed the two exchanges combined for 2.03 trillion yuan in turnover, about 271.72 billion more than the previous session. With 44% of stocks rising on the day, the clear sector rotation suggests investors are locking in profits from high-flying tech names and rotating into defensives like pork and baijiu, a trend that may continue if the market stays rangebound.
