[Click to register] According to people familiar with the matter, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt holds roughly a 1% stake in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, which means that once Anthropic goes public, he could be in line for a massive "windfall." Sources said Schmidt invested tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic's Series A funding round. It is not clear whether he has sold any of his shares since then.
Anthropic's planned initial public offering (IPO) is expected to deliver substantial returns for its early investors and employees. Reports last week said some investors discussed a valuation of about $1.5 trillion at a meeting, a figure below the previously expected roughly $2 trillion. In an IPO prospectus that surfaced in September, Anthropic laid out a vision in which artificial intelligence's transformative effect on the global economy would be more profound than that of industrialization, electricity, and the internet.
Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) are early backers of Anthropic, pouring billions of dollars into the company and providing the cloud computing capacity needed to develop and run its Claude artificial intelligence models.
Schmidt served as Google's CEO from 2001 to 2011, and later served as executive chairman of Google's parent company Alphabet until he stepped down in January 2018.
