An ITA Airways aircraft is parked at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport. Under an agreement reached with Italy's Ministry of Economy and Finance in 2023, Germany's Lufthansa already holds a 41% stake in ITA Airways.
Lufthansa has announced it will invest nearly $400 million to acquire a majority stake in Italy's ITA Airways, further integrating the former Alitalia carrier into its own operational system.
In 2023, as the Italian government pushed for the privatization of the airline, Lufthansa reached an agreement with Italy's Ministry of Economy and Finance, securing an initial 41% stake in ITA Airways along with an option to increase its shareholding later.
Lufthansa stated that it will exercise this option next month, acquiring an additional 49% stake for €325 million (approximately $383 million). This will raise its total ownership to 90%, giving it absolute control.
The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals from the European Union and the U.S. Department of Justice, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2027.
