CHINA EAST AIR Places USD15.80 Billion Catalogue-Priced Order for 101 Airbus A320NEO Aircraft

Bulletin Express03-25

CHINA EAST AIR (China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited) has signed a major purchase agreement with Airbus SAS to acquire 101 A320NEO-series aircraft. The contract, executed on 25 March 2026 in Shanghai, represents a catalogue value of approximately USD15.80 billion (RMB108.89 billion at USD1:RMB6.8911).

The aircraft will be delivered in five annual batches between 2028 and 2032: 9 units in 2028, 19 in 2029, 30 in 2030, 27 in 2031 and 16 in 2032. During the same period, the airline expects to retire at least 53 older A320-series jets, positioning the new fleet primarily as replacement capacity.

Airbus granted “substantive price concessions” following arm’s-length negotiations, making the final consideration materially lower than the published catalogue price. The payment schedule involves instalments—initial advance payments followed by settlement of balances upon each delivery date. Funding will come from a mix of internal resources, commercial bank loans and capital-market instruments such as bond issuance, which management states will not materially affect the carrier’s cash flow or operations.

Under Hong Kong Listing Rule 14.07, the transaction’s percentage ratio exceeds 25% but remains below 100%, classifying the deal as a major transaction. Consequently, it requires shareholder approval and formal disclosure. A detailed circular is scheduled for dispatch to shareholders on or before 14 May 2026.

Management cites confidence in China’s civil-aviation growth and the company’s hub strategy centred on Shanghai as core rationales for the fleet upgrade. The A320NEO’s improved fuel efficiency and operating economics are expected to enhance competitiveness and support China’s “Dual-Carbon” goals by reducing per-seat emissions.
