BYD Achieves Remarkable Sales Growth in Japan Despite Market Challenges

Deep News04-21

Recent data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA) reveals that BYD Company Limited recorded 625 vehicle registrations in Japan during March 2026, nearly doubling compared to the same period last year. For the first quarter of 2026, BYD's overall sales in Japan surged by over 100% year-on-year, demonstrating rapid expansion and successfully establishing a foothold in the competitive Japanese market.

The Japanese automotive market has long been dominated by domestic brands, which hold more than 90% market share. Foreign automakers face multiple obstacles, including stringent compliance requirements, high localization costs, and the need to develop specialized vehicle models. Compounding these challenges, Japan recently revised its clean energy vehicle subsidy policy. Under the new scheme, subsidies for BYD models were sharply reduced from 350,000–400,000 yen to just 150,000 yen per vehicle. In contrast, Toyota received 1.3 million yen per vehicle, while Tesla's subsidy increased from 870,000 yen to 1.27 million yen. Despite this unfavorable subsidy environment, BYD managed to double its sales, highlighting its resilience.

BYD's growth in Japan stems from two decades of dedicated effort. As the only Chinese automaker with a comprehensive presence in Japan, the company operates across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and energy storage sectors. It has also introduced its first Japan-specific model, the BYD RACCO. By the end of March 2026, BYD had launched four all-electric models—ATTO 3, DOLPHIN, SEAL, and SEALION 7—along with the SEALION 6 plug-in hybrid in Japan. The company has simultaneously rolled out over-the-air (OTA) update services, certified pre-owned vehicles, and extended battery warranty programs.

In terms of sales network, BYD has established 70 retail locations across Japan since opening its first store in January 2023. These outlets cover eight major administrative regions, enhancing both service accessibility and customer satisfaction.

Industry analysts note that BYD's two decades of local experience, advanced new energy technology, and deepening localization strategies are helping it build recognition for Chinese automotive brands in Japan. Further achievements are anticipated in the future.
