I. Market Overview

The Hong Kong market ended the May 6 session on a firm footing. The benchmark Hang Seng Index (HSI) closed at 26,213.78, up 1.22% (+315.17 points), supported by strength in chipmakers, tobacco names and selected cyclical plays. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index (HSCEI) gained 0.80% to 8,800.75, while the technology-heavy Hang Seng Tech Index (HSTECH) added 0.80% to 4,969.20. Turnover remained healthy at HKD 304.74 billion, indicating active participation across sectors.

Positive sentiment was underpinned by sharp moves in semiconductor and materials counters following upbeat earnings and global tech optimism. Meanwhile, defensives such as gold miners and tobacco groups also outperformed. Although a number of growth names posted modest pullbacks, the breadth of gainers outweighed losers, enabling all three major indices to finish higher for the day.

V. Closing Summary

1. Hong Kong equities advanced on May 6, with the HSI climbing more than one percentage point on solid turnover of HKD 304.74 billion. Investor confidence found support in cyclical and thematic plays, helping all primary indices close in positive territory.

2. Within large-cap technology, semiconductor leaders shone. HUA HONG SEMI (+9.33%) and SMIC (+5.72%) rallied after upbeat global chip demand signals, while internet heavyweights such as Tencent (−1.95%) and Meituan (−1.26%) eased, highlighting a rotation toward hardware beneficiaries of artificial-intelligence spending.

3. The day’s biggest individual gainers featured ETF products tracking Korean memory giants, alongside chip designers Montage Tech and GigaDevice. Gold miners like Chifeng Gold (+11.14%) also surged, matching strength in spot gold prices. On the downside, biotech names XuanZhuBio-B (−9.85%) and CStone Pharma-B (−9.12%) came under pressure amid sector-specific profit-taking.

4. Sector data underscored risk appetite for materials and property-linked counters: Tobacco, Building Products and Gold ranked as standout performers, each posting gains above 6%. In contrast, IT Consulting, Homefurnishing Retail and Industrial Gases lagged, reflecting selective rotation rather than broad market weakness.
