Qualcomm Partners with Wayve to Accelerate Deployment of AI-Powered Autonomous Driving Systems

Qualcomm and UK-based autonomous driving startup Wayve announced on Tuesday a collaboration to develop an integrated artificial intelligence system designed to help automakers rapidly deploy advanced driver-assistance and autonomous driving features.

The partnership combines Wayve's "AI Driver" software with Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride platform, which includes vehicle-grade chipsets and active safety software. The result is a scalable platform that automakers can utilize across various vehicle models, supporting capabilities ranging from entry-level systems to high-level autonomous driving.

As automakers increasingly seek out systems to accelerate the rollout of progressively more advanced autonomous functions, chipmakers and software developers are competing to provide the underlying technology for future vehicles.

The companies stated that the integrated system aims to reduce the complexity automakers face when combining hardware and software from different suppliers, such as chips, safety systems, and AI software. Subject to regulatory approval, the platform is intended to support a range of functions from hands-free driving assistance to advanced "eyes-off" autonomous operation.

They added that this combined solution is scalable across different vehicle tiers and geographic markets, allowing automakers to standardize their core technology foundation.

Wayve, which has received investment from Nvidia, develops AI models using real-world driving data. This approach enables vehicles to learn driving behaviors and adapt to diverse road conditions and regions without relying heavily on rule-based programming.

Qualcomm, which has expanded its business beyond smartphones, stated that its Snapdragon Ride platform delivers high-performance, low-power computing for sophisticated AI systems in vehicles while meeting stringent safety standards.

The companies noted that automakers are showing growing interest in systems that can shorten development cycles and allow for the expansion of vehicle capabilities via software updates throughout a car's lifespan.

Founded in 2017, Wayve is part of a new generation of AI-focused autonomous driving companies. These firms adopt a software-centric approach, relying on machine learning rather than systems that are heavily dependent on detailed maps.

The startup secured $1.2 billion in funding last month, achieving a valuation of $8.6 billion. Investors include Mercedes-Benz, Nvidia, Nissan, and Uber.
