End of Semiconductor Pioneer Era: Nikon Corp. Announces Closure of 58-Year-Old Yokohama Manufacturing Plant on September 30

Deep News08-26

Nikon Corp. announced it will close its Yokohama manufacturing facility on September 30, 2025, with personnel and operations to be transferred to other facilities. The precision equipment division has experienced declining revenues in recent years due to economic stagnation, demographic changes in Japan, and shrinking demand in the semiconductor and display markets. Additionally, operational difficulties at major client Intel and U.S. tariff issues have further intensified pressure, ultimately leading to the closure of the Yokohama facility, marking the end of Nikon Corp.'s era as a semiconductor pioneer.

According to public records, the Yokohama facility was established in 1967 and has operated for 58 years. It was Nikon Corp.'s first production base established outside its headquarters and holds significant importance in Japan's semiconductor industry.

Nikon Corp. stated that the facility closure is expected to impact the company's financial performance in 2025, with precision equipment business revenue projected to decline 8.4% in fiscal 2025 to 185 billion yen (approximately 8.978 billion yuan at current exchange rates).
