A Tale of Shared Roots: A Mutual Journey from Changbai Mountain to the Hun River

Deep News06-14

Last night at Tiexi Stadium, the second round of the Northeast Super League featured a marquee match between Shenyang and Yanbian. In the end, Shenyang secured a 1-0 victory over Yanbian, marking their second consecutive win. The enthusiasm of 41,387 fans was undeterred by the rain, as they flooded into the stadium, reigniting the summer night with their deafening roars of support. The significance of this match extended far beyond the sport of soccer itself; it stood as a heartwarming testament to the mutual journey between the people of Northeast China and their adopted second hometowns.

In preparation for this game, the planning efforts of the Liaoning Changbai Tiger Fan Association began quietly as soon as the first-round draw concluded. As a grassroots organization composed of people from Yanbian who now live and work in Liaoning, they poured their longing for home and their passion for soccer into every detail. From the pattern designs on their supporter jerseys and scarves to the meticulous crafting of their chant playlist, and even to the Yanbian delicacies like gimbap and Korean fried chicken prepared for the traveling fans on match day—every element radiated the familiar, vibrant spirit from the foothills of Changbai Mountain. Each familiar taste served as a gentle reflection on their shared hometown ties.

Behind the fan association lies a particularly moving story of a married couple. The husband, Liu Yang, arrived in Shenyang in 2007 and met his wife, Sun Tingting, also a fellow native of Yanbian, in 2016. Bonded by their shared roots and love for soccer, the couple founded the Liaoning Changbai Tiger Fan Association in Liaoning in 2017 and moved to Shenyang together the following year to develop it further. It was on April 28, 2018, right at Tiexi Stadium, that Liu Yang successfully proposed to Sun Tingting. Soccer bore witness to their love and became the bridge connecting their hometown to their second home, Shenyang.

For the Liu family and every member of the association, the meaning of the Northeast Super League has long transcended mere competition. It is a cultural and tourism feast, an opportunity to stimulate local employment and invigorate the consumer market. It is also a mutual cultural exchange—allowing Yanbian natives traveling to Shenyang to feel the warmth of home, while enabling more people in Liaoning to understand and fall in love with Yanbian through its cuisine, dance, music, and infectious enthusiasm.

As the final whistle cut through the clamor, the outcome of the match will eventually fade with time. However, the arms waving for their hometown team in the stands, the hoarse yet persistent cheers, and the fervent declarations of countless Yanbian natives in Liaonyang for their ancestral land have already surpassed the final score. Together, they have formed the most vivid and passionate footnote to the enduring spirit of "One Family in the Northeast."
