But the marketrebounded sharply on Monday.\nBTIG’s chief equity and derivatives strategist Julian Emanuel predicts continued volatility in the market, particularly leading up to the next Fed meeting.\n“We tend to be a little bit more cautious. We think the value theme continues to work long term, but what we really like now is what we call ‘defensive value,’” Emanuel said Tuesday on“CNBC’s Worldwide Exchange.”\nValue stocks are names that are trading at prices perceived to be relatively cheap for their returns. Defensive stocks are shares that tend to be stable regardless of how the overall market performs.\nSectors that fit the “defensive value” criteria include healthcare and real estate investment trusts, or REITs, Emanuel said.\nHealthcare has been “overlooked for the better part of the entire rally,” while REITs “are very well-positioned from here,” he added.\nHigher interest rates tend to correlate with higher REIT prices. Rising rates typically signal a growing economy, which increases the value of real estate assets, and thus REITs.\n″[REITs] actually tend to not correlate as much to the S&P 500, and people look at REITs as a potential inflation hedge,” Emanuel said.\nWhile Emanuel remains cautious and awaitscomments from Fed Chair Jerome Powelllater Tuesday, the BTIG strategist is betting on a continued growing economy.\n“We think the value theme is intact,” he said. “It’s a multi-year theme, not a multi-quarter theme, and we think the economy is going to
