Interbank Daily Trading Volume Jumps 46% Year-on-Year in April, Central Bank Reports

Data from the central bank on May 22 shows that in April 2026, the average daily turnover of interbank lending reached 461.48 billion yuan, marking a 46.0% increase compared to the same period last year. The average daily turnover of bond repurchases in the interbank market was 8.4 trillion yuan, up 36.2% year-on-year. By the end of April 2026, the outstanding balance of interbank lending stood at 1.1 trillion yuan, while the outstanding balance of bond repurchases in the interbank market was 10.5 trillion yuan. The monthly weighted average interest rate for the overnight pledged repo rate among deposit-taking financial institutions (DR001) was 1.23% in April 2026, down 8 basis points from the previous month. The DR007 monthly weighted average rate was 1.35%, a decrease of 9 basis points month-on-month. The monthly weighted average rate for the overnight pledged repo rate in the interbank market (R001) was 1.30%, also down 9 basis points from the prior month. In April 2026, the average daily spread between DR001 and the central bank's 7-day reverse repo rate was -17 basis points, while the average daily spread between R001 and DR001 was 7 basis points. In other financial markets, the Shanghai Composite Index closed at 4112.2 points at the end of April 2026, rising 5.7% month-on-month. The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 15107.6 points, up 12.1% from the previous month. The average daily turnover for the two stock exchanges was 2343.79 billion yuan in April, a 1.3% increase from March. At the Shanghai Gold Exchange, the Au (T+D) contract settled at 1014.0 yuan per gram by the end of April, a slight decrease of 0.2% from the previous month. Gold trading volume at the Shanghai Gold Exchange was 5633.7 tons in April, down 17.0% year-on-year, while trading volume at the Shanghai Futures Exchange was 13,000 tons, a significant decrease of 64.3% compared to the same period last year.
