China's Highest-Altitude Gas Field Hits 109.148 Billion Cubic Meters of Cumulative Natural Gas Output Over 31 Years

Qinghai Oilfield's No. 1 Gas Production Plant has reported that the Sebei Gas Field has produced a cumulative total of 109.148 billion cubic meters of natural gas from the start of trial production in 1995 through October 31, 2026, providing a reliable supply of natural gas to Qinghai, Tibet, Gansu and Ningxia for 31 consecutive years.

Located beside Lake Senie in the eastern Qaidam Basin of Qinghai Province, the Sebei Gas Field is characterized by high reserve abundance, shallow burial depth and good quality. It is a Quaternary unconsolidated sandstone self-generating and self-storing biogenic gas reservoir, making it a typical non-sour gas field in China. It is the highest-altitude gas-producing area in China with the harshest conditions and the most severe environment, having been discovered in 1964.

In 2007, the Sebei Gas Field's cumulative natural gas output exceeded 10 billion cubic meters for the first time. Over the following decade and more, through technological process upgrades, production capacity adjustments, development process enhancements and automated station construction, the field maintained a stable annual output of 5 billion cubic meters for 15 consecutive years, continuously supplying clean energy to 9 cities and 6 counties across the four provinces and regions.

Zhao Yuqin, deputy director of the Technical Research Center of Qinghai Oilfield's No. 1 Gas Production Plant, said that based on dynamic reservoir assessments, the Sebei Gas Field can maintain stable production at an annual output of more than 4 billion cubic meters until 2035, ensuring the needs of surrounding users. In addition, some blocks around Sebei are also undergoing trial production and potential evaluation, with intensified natural gas exploration efforts forming a gradient replacement layout to support subsequent increases in natural gas production targets.
