Hurricane Helene has forced the shutdown of two major quartz mining operations in North Carolina that supply over 80% of the world's high-purity quartz, a critical material for the semiconductor and solar industries.
Sibelco and Quartz Corp, the two mining companies located near Spruce Pine, North Carolina, halted production on September 26 due to the hurricane's impact. The region has experienced severe flooding, power outages, and communication disruptions, making it difficult to restart operations.
While the impact on global chipmaking remains unclear, major semiconductor companies like Infineon Technologies AG and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. are monitoring the situation closely. However, they do not anticipate significant disruptions to their operations in the short term, as they maintain stockpiles of essential components.
