Autonomous driving technology firm Pony AI announced at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show that its fully driverless Robotaxi, scheduled for a 2027 release, will have a total vehicle cost below 230,000 yuan. The company also unveiled the world's first fully compliant, redundant Level 4 autonomous light truck. Leveraging its World Model 2.0 technology platform, Pony AI aims to connect urban transportation, delivery, and long-haul logistics through benchmark L4 solutions, enabling efficient movement of people and goods and reshaping the trillion-yuan autonomous driving industry ecosystem.
Founder and CEO James Peng highlighted that the total cost of the 2027 Robotaxi—including the vehicle, autonomous driving kit, and battery—will be lower than the base price of the domestically produced Tesla Model 3. This continued cost reduction enhances the economic feasibility of expanding Robotaxi services to more Chinese cities. Additionally, the company plans to launch an overseas version tailored to local regulations, infrastructure, and user needs, targeting deployments of over a thousand units in international markets.
In April 2025, Pony AI introduced its industry-leading seventh-generation Robotaxi at the Shanghai Auto Show. Within just six months, the model began operations in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, achieving positive unit economics in the latter two cities. Pony AI's Robotaxi fleet has grown to over 1,400 vehicles, serving more than one million users—a nearly threefold increase year-over-year—establishing it as a trusted daily transportation option.
Peng emphasized that managing a driverless fleet represents an operational revolution aimed at delivering efficient, consistent, and safe service. Pony AI employs a globally standardized, full-lifecycle management system covering vehicle deployment, retrieval, charging, cleaning, and maintenance. Supported by continuous upgrades to its "virtual driver" technology, the company’s Robotaxis provide a consistently high-quality ride experience 24/7. By integrating technological capability with operational excellence, Pony AI is redefining urban mobility, transforming vehicles into secure, private, and multifunctional mobile spaces.
To accelerate the positive cycle of cost reduction and scale, Pony AI has adopted a dual-engine strategy: deepening its presence in first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen by expanding fleet size and operational coverage, while simultaneously entering new tier-one cities such as Hangzhou and Changsha. The company is also rolling out Robotaxi services and testing in overseas markets including Croatia and Singapore. Pony AI expects to operate in over 20 cities globally by 2026, with a total fleet exceeding 3,000 vehicles. This includes a planned deployment of 1,000 Toyota bZ4X-based Robotaxis, which are already undergoing fully driverless testing and are set to enter commercial service in first-tier cities.
