Uber has announced a workforce reduction of 10% within its customer service division, a move framed as part of a broader initiative to streamline its employee base and more fully integrate artificial intelligence.
A company spokesperson stated the decision aims to simplify operations, enhance in-person collaboration, and further the adoption of AI technologies.
Concurrently, team members who were previously working remotely are now required to relocate to Uber's designated office hubs, aligning with the company's return-to-office policy.
In an internal memo, Megha Yethatika, Uber's Vice President of Global Community Operations, noted that "our organization has become overly complex and siloed."
She acknowledged that the department has "made some progress" in applying AI, but emphasized that "to unlock the potential of AI, we need an efficient organizational structure to support its application. We cannot scale cutting-edge technology on top of fragmented processes."
