Hong Kong Airport Express Line Now Fully Integrated with UnionPay Mobile Payment Services

Deep News06-02

The Airport Express Line of Hong Kong's MTR system has now officially launched UnionPay mobile payment services. This development completes the full coverage of UnionPay payments across the MTR's heavy rail network, offering a more efficient and convenient travel payment experience for both Hong Kong residents and visitors to the city.

On the Airport Express Line, UnionPay users can now pay for rides by scanning a QR code via the UnionPay App, tapping their UnionPay credit card for contactless payment, or using mobile wallet products like Apple Pay or Huawei Pay that are linked to a UnionPay credit card. Furthermore, using the UnionPay App or UnionPay mobile wallets for travel on the Airport Express Line provides a discount of HK$2 per trip, delivering additional savings to passengers.

A Milestone in MTR Payment Integration

The MTR is Hong Kong's primary public transport system. Collaboration between UnionPay and the MTR on payment solutions has been deepening in recent years. In 2022, the MTR heavy rail network (excluding the Airport Express Line) began accepting QR code payments via the UnionPay App. In 2024, contactless payment services were added to these lines, making UnionPay the first payment brand to offer both QR code scanning and contactless tap-and-go gate access methods. The recent upgrade of equipment and services on the Airport Express Line signifies UnionPay's achievement of comprehensive coverage across the entire MTR heavy rail system.

Expanding Regional Transport Payment Network

UnionPay has established an integrated transport payment network that connects Hong Kong and Macau locally while extending its reach across the Greater Bay Area. In Hong Kong and Macau, major public transport services—including Kowloon Motor Bus, Citybus, tramways, ferries, taxis, minibuses, Macau public buses, and light rail—all accept UnionPay payments. Cross-border transport hubs like the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, Shenzhen-Hong Kong cross-border buses, and the TurboJET ferry service are also integrated with UnionPay services. Vehicles traveling between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau can also utilize convenient services in Guangdong, such as contactless parking payments and highway ETC toll collection.
