OpenAI released its new large AI model, GPT-5.5, on Thursday, describing it as the most intelligent and intuitively usable model to date. The model demonstrates enhanced capabilities across multiple domains. OpenAI's co-founder and President, Greg Brockman, stated that this update brings the company a step closer to its goal of building a proprietary AI super application.
During a media conference call, Brockman indicated that the new model represents a significant breakthrough in the fields of agentification and natural interactive computing.
"This model takes a substantial step towards the future form of computing we envision, but this is just one step; we will release many more iterative versions in the future," Brockman said. "Compared to GPT-5.4, it operates faster, with more precise logic, and consumes fewer tokens. This means businesses and average users can access more advanced AI capabilities, which is one of our key objectives."
Brockman also mentioned that this model serves as crucial groundwork for building a super app. Such an application would function like a digital Swiss Army knife, integrating multiple services. He and co-founder Sam Altman have previously outlined plans for a product that would combine ChatGPT, the code model Codex, and an AI browser into a unified service for enterprise clients. Notably, the super app is also a key strategic focus for Elon Musk. Musk, an early member of OpenAI, now competes with Altman in the industry and has publicly stated his intention to develop the social platform X into his own super app.
OpenAI had just updated its previous generation model last month, following releases in December and November of last year. The company maintains a rapid pace of model iteration, and internal sources suggest this trend of frequent updates will continue in the near term. OpenAI's Chief Scientist, Ilya Sutskever, commented, "We will see significant improvements in model capabilities in the short term, with even greater leaps in the medium term. Frankly, I feel the pace of model evolution over the past two years has been somewhat slow."
OpenAI introduced GPT-5.5 as having a wide range of applicable scenarios, covering both foundational enterprise-level applications like agent programming and knowledge processing, as well as cutting-edge exploratory fields such as mathematical computation and scientific research. Benchmark results released by the company on Thursday show the model performing excellently in multiple tests. OpenAI's official comparisons indicate that GPT-5.5 consistently leads in comprehensive scores against its own older models and competing models from Google and Anthropic, including Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro and Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5.
Industry discussion often centers on the competition between OpenAI and Anthropic, and the release of GPT-5.5 has again sparked comparisons between the two companies' capabilities. During the presentation, a journalist asked if GPT-5.5's capabilities were a direct response to the cybersecurity tool Mythos, recently launched by Anthropic. (This tool has recently garnered significant attention due to controversies surrounding unauthorized data access.) Mia Glazes, a member of OpenAI's technical team, responded that GPT-5.5 will significantly optimize the company's strategy for deploying models in the digital security and protection domain. She stated, "We have a long-standing, mature strategic focus on cybersecurity and have refined a stable, secure model deployment mechanism."
OpenAI's Chief Research Officer, Mark Chen, stated that GPT-5.5's ability to control computers for office tasks surpasses that of previous models. It also shows marked improvement in scientific and technical research workflows, providing tangible assistance to professional researchers. He added that the model can also be applied in drug discovery, a field that has become a highly competitive arena in the global tech industry in recent years.
OpenAI announced that GPT-5.5 is fully available for use starting Thursday. The model will be accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. The high-performance version, GPT-5.5 Pro, is available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.
