Alibaba Restructures AI Organization, Establishes Token Foundry Business Unit

Deep News06-08

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE: BABA) is continuing to upgrade its organizational structure in preparation for the future of artificial intelligence. The company announced today the merger of its Tongyi large language model division and its Future Life Laboratory to form a new Token Foundry business unit, which will be directly overseen by Group CEO Yongming Wu.

This reorganization involves a range of AI-related operations. Jingren Zhou will take on the role of Alibaba's Chief Scientist, leading the establishment of the Alibaba AI Future Research Institute. This institute will focus on the exploration and breakthroughs in cutting-edge AI technology. Additionally, Bo Zheng will join the Token Foundry business unit, bringing teams such as Happy Horse and Happy Oyster under his leadership.

Strategic Focus on AI

This latest upgrade represents Alibaba's continued and intensified commitment to the AI sector. The capabilities of its latest Qwen-3.7 model are particularly noteworthy, achieving a top-three global and leading domestic position in coding proficiency. The model has gained widespread recognition within developer communities and among industry clients. The company's most recent quarterly financial report, released last month, marked the first time Alibaba disclosed that its AI business has progressed beyond the initial investment phase and has entered a period of commercial returns, a development that has been met with a positive response from the capital markets.

Leadership in AI Development

Jingren Zhou has been a pivotal figure in the development of the Tongyi large model team, guiding its growth from inception to establishing the leading position of the Qwen series among global models. He became an Alibaba partner last year. The title of Chief Scientist represents the highest academic honor within Alibaba's technical system. This appointment is both a high recognition of Zhou's contributions and a strategic move oriented towards future advancements.
